I have a very happy and a very sad memory that I would have to choose between. The happy is a few years ago, I spent my Thanksgiving at the local Children’s hospital in the playrooms helping patients make their own Thanksgiving pies. We rolled out dough, I washed play dough cutters so they could cut designs to put on top of their pies, and for a few hours, we all were playing, laughing and decorating, forgetting for a moment that the kids were stuck in the hospital on Thanksgiving. The memory makes me smile even to this day and still stands as one of my favorite holidays. It also makes me miss my days as a volunteer at that hospital, and makes me remember why I am in school and why I continue on the path I’m winding down.

The sad memory would have to undoubtedly be sitting with my grandfather in the ICU a few days before he passed away. Misdiagnosed as pneumonia for over a year, he was finally correctly diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and 17 days later he was gone. It was fast, confusing and painful for the entire family, but as the eldest grandchild and the one that wasn’t ‘supposed to be’, he and I bonded the greatest. The memory is of him in ICU, knowing he was going to be gone soon, and with tears in his eyes, apologizing to me that he wouldn’t be alive to walk me down the aisle. As sad as it makes me, it also reminds me of what an outstanding man he was and will always be in my mind.
