The way he looked at me when I asked him if breaking up would make life easier on us. He was moving to Washington State with his grandparents to get in-state tuition to UDub. I was in Kentucky. We were too young to be let out on our own. At the time, I thought it was something like pity and remorse - I thought I made him regret his choice and I hated myself for it. Thinking back on it, it was more like an unwillingness to understand what I was on about, and it was better to leave it sooner than later.

I don’t think I ever could forget that face.
